Mauro Mori

Ever since his early youth Mauro Mori (Cremona, IT, 1965) has traveled widely expressing his perceptions and experience of the world through a natural inclination to manual creativity. Getting to know different cultures and places, together with his interest in natural and organic environment are keys to his research process which reinvents time-honored techniques according to a personal approach. Solid blocks of wood or stone are most often worked in their place of origin, resulting in hand-carved both functional and non-functional sculptures which preserve the vibrance of a relational and intimate encounter between Mori and the materials. Single marble blocks are chosen personally by Mori in Carrara, Italy while most of wood works are molded by the artist in Seychelles using Albizia Rosa wood. Simple shapes leaving space for natural materials to express their natural uniqueness, following an archetypal process of knowledge through subtraction: developments of this practice are also to be found in metal’s works, tooled from metal sheets, or cast and then finished with oxidations and patinas. The will to give value to all those so-called imperfections of materials is a common thread running through all Mori cohesive body of work. Mori’s philosophy of work is achieved through the application of some essential “values”, such as: – exclusive use of natural materials – involvement of the perceptive senses – three-dimensionality-craftsmanship / hand made-simplicity. From 1995 until 2004 he designed and produced a collection distributed by Mondo Cappellini. In 1998 he inaugurated his own atelier in Milan, where he experiments and distributes his work. Today, his work belongs to significant collections around the world, both institutional and private, and has been the subject of numerous exhibitions in the US, Europe, and Asia.
