Biography

Julien Gorrias, designer and founder of Carbone 14 Studio, leads an agency committed to a sustainable, sensitive and poetic approach to design. Born in 1985, his career has been shaped by a profound attention to material, gesture, and the thoughtful consideration of how objects are used.

Initially trained in theatre and commedia dell’arte, he discovered in Emilia-Romagna the artisanal production of masks in wood and leather. This immersion in manual craftsmanship, precision, and expressivity has left a lasting imprint on his creative approach. He subsequently joined Aldebaran Robotics, where he designed interactive scenographies for the Nao and Pepper robots and developed a reflection on the relationship between humans, objects, and technology.

After graduating from ENSCI – Les Ateliers, he founded Carbone14.studio in 2020. The studio quickly established a singular identity, blending material research, a poetic approach to form, and environmental responsibility. Its projects — such as The Chair That Hides the ForestThe Lamp That Goes Silky, or the Torii Table created for the Mobilier National — investigate how objects shape the ways we inhabit  the world, revealing the subtle, sensitive connections we maintain with the elements.

Exhibiting in France and internationally, Julien Gorrias collaborates with cultural institutions, manufactories, and companies seeking to transform their practices. His dedication has led him to experiment with new materials, notably ceramics during a research residency in Munich, Bavaria, where he further explored the intersection of craft, innovation, and environmental responsibility..

Through Carbone 14, he champions the ecological transition of the design sector, creating objects, scenographies, and installations that encourage reflection, attentive observation, and a reconsideration of how we produce and create.
